Astra şi recunoaşterea literară în Transilvania: premiul "Andrei Mureşanu"

  • Subiect: The beginning of the 20th century brings to the fore the previous century’s questions regarding the intellectuals’ role in society, but at a different level. The gravity with which this question is being asked suggests that we are facing a crucial point for the Romanian Transylvanian society. Any examination of the cultural project of Transylvania cannot be done without discussing its institutionalized dimension, namely, the strategies pursued by ASTRA, the institution that enrolled an impressive share of the time’s cultural elite. In 1905, ASTRA will provide for the first time the “Andrei Mureşanu” Award for the best writer of the year. This competition is relevant for how the idea of writer is being configured in this area, the means of literature or the way literary recognition function. My study also analyses one of the major dilemmas for ASTRA”s literary department, the separation of literature from culture. There is much confusion that arises at this level and the literary competition will be affected by all the literary concessions that appear. My study aims to reflect on the neglected status of the Transylvanian Romanian writers and on the elements that suggest a more clear delineation of a professional identity.
