Atelierul de artizanat de la Dierna (Orşova). Producţia de fibule

  • Subiect: In 1979, A. Bodor and I. Winkler published the artisan workshop from Dierna (Orşova). The size of the researched area (68.5 m2) led the authors to conclude that a craft workshop had been running in Dierna since the beginning of the province, until the 4'" century AD. This chronology is based on the archaeological material uncovered - coins, brooches and pottery. The workshop was first located in a wooden building until the end of Hadrian's reign; it was rebuilt in stone soon after that. The plan of the construction could not be determined due to the surrounding buildings. The main reasons for assigning the researched area to a workshop were the remains of an oven and several other discoveries like melting pots, lead bars and keel blocks, under processing or completed pieces, or tools (a pair of scissors and an iron knife). The authors attributed all these discoveries to a complex metal and glass ware workshop. Alas, the results of the research were not fully published. Most of the archaeological finds ended up in Cluj-Napoca, in the storage of the Institute of Archaeology and Art History. When the store house was reorganized and the material in the former restoration laboratory was processed, unpublished finds from the workshop from Dierna were identified (145 pieces). They consist of brooches (pl. 1), casting shafts (pl. 2/10-12) and bronze pearls (pl. 7/124-133), plate fragments (pl. 4/40-75; pl. 5/76-93), a bronze coin (as sec. I, pl. 2/13), fragments of military equipment, (pl. 2/14-15; pl. 3/24, 25, 28-35), shackles, (pl. 3/20; pl. 4/39), a piece of harness (pl. 3/38), furniture accessories (pl.2/19; pl. 3/37), daily use objects - palette knives (pl. 2/16- 17), a needle (pl. 2/18), weights (pl. 3/21-23, 36), nails (pl. 3/26, 27), and lead fragments, (pl. 8). The analysis of the archaeological finds indicates that the workshop from Dierna was bronze ware manufacturing centre, where clothing accessories (buckles) and brooches were produced. There is no clear evidence concerning other bronze ware being manufactured here. The best analogy for this workshop is the one from Tibiscum. Dierna is, after Micia, Porolissum, Ilişua, and Napoca the 5th center for the brooches production (pl. 9). In what concerns the iron, gold, and glass manufacturing, the analysis of the archaeological finds brings no relevant reason to support their existence. Chronologically speaking, there is no proof in favour of dating the workshop in the 4th century AD.
