Tipuri de monumente sculpturale romane necunoscute de la Gherla

  • Subiect: Gherla, an important settlement of Dacia Porolisenssis, was a notable centre of Roman art. Nowadays, some new interesting Roman architectural and sculptural types from the Museum of History Gherla and The Museum of National History of Transylvania from Cluj, carved in local stone, have been identified. When the local museum opened a lapidarium, new monuments were brought to our attention. The majority of these artefacts were discovered by chance, all of them having a special scientific and artistic value. Even though a local stonemason's workshop was believed to have functioned in the settlement area, there were no archaeological finds to prove it. Eleven new monuments were identified. The first one is a bas-relief with a representation of Amor (fig.10) which is part of a remarkable funerary construction, with pillars and a central inscription. The second one is a monument with a representation of a togatus (fig.11), only the lower part preserved, what may be a representation of a local aristocrat. The third one is an architrave with inscription from an impressive aedicule, elevated for a very important local character Secundinus, dated after the constitutio Antoniniana (fig. 12). The fourth is the slab of an arcosolium (fig.13), identified from two different pieces that were given a false interpretation. Number five is a fragment of a large monument with inscription (fig.14), derived from the central body of an architectonic structure with funerary utility. The other ones are: a fragment of an aediculae roof (fig. 15), a fragment of a pad fluted column (fig.16), a fragment of a slick column (fig.17), a column with flutings, two fragments of doric capitals (fig. 19, 20), a fragment of a feminine statue (fig. 21). These newly identified types of Roman sculptural monuments testify to the existence of local funerary, religious and public buildings and prove the hypothesis of a local stone mason's workshop.
