Subiect: This study deals with a major debate in Romanian ancient historiography under the communist regime. The debate centred on the discussion regarding the Dacian 'obşte' (peasant community), social structure and state. Firstly it prevailed a dogmatic Marxist scheme (an early slave - system state). Thereafter appeared some attempts to reconsider it, throughout the 'new' Marxist theory of an 'Asiatic mode of production'. However, both major explanations for Dacian state's making and structure are highly problematic today: the economical (Marxist) or the ethnical (nationalistic) causes. Which is more alarming is that the new theories for economic life and social history (especially anthropological ones) are not only unused in Romania, but also not even known.
