Românii-americani între identitate etnică şi asimilare. Consideraţii generale

  • Subiect: This approach tries to reveal general issues concerning Romanian immigration and assimilation problems in the United States of America, which haven't been debated upon so much. In this work I started by writing a short Romanian immigration history in the United States of America, considering those facts that made this happen as well as its results. There are three significant periods of Romanian immigration to U.S.A., the first and the most important is that between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the end of the First World War, to be more specific. During this first period, Romanians, most of them Transylvanian peasants, immigrated to the "Promised Land" because of political and religious persecutions they had to experience and because of their economic problems. After 1918, marking the second period of this process, a part of those immigrants returned to Romania in order to start a new life, those who remained in the U.S.A. continued their life inside Romanian communities well built at that time. As for the InterWar period, Romanian immigration was not as strong as it was during the first period because of American immigration laws (restrictions). In order for my work to be complete, for the third immigration period 1 used a part of an interview recorded with Alexandru Nemoianu, a researcher at the Romanian-American Heritage Center "Valerian Trifa" in Jackson (Michigan). He made an interesting description of Romanian immigrants in the U.S.A., which I thought to be useful to mention as it represents a Romanian-American point of view. In the final part of my work, I underlined some important aspects of the assimilation and acculturation processes, which were and are unavoidable in American society. American historiography named this process "MELTING POT", where cultures and civilizations seem to mix together, inevitably adopting the American life style.
