Constantin Moisil - numismat al antichităţii

  • Subiect: The author tries to present the part of ancient numismatics of the academician Constantin Moisil (1878-1918), which is a component of his scientific work. A large number of his studies are dedicated to the description and identification of the coins; the coin hoards were treated very superficially and he didn't touch the problems concerning the monetary circulation. He studied especially the problems of coins from Dacia, particularly those of Dobroudja, the coins of the Dacian tribes and the Roman coins. He had a large contribution concerning the Dobroudjan numismatics by publishing a lot of monetary finds. He was also the first who made a chronological and typological classification of the Dacian coins. The Roman coins were treated more superficially: he described only coins of some Roman emperors and he hadn't a major contribution in this part. He made in his studies bigger or smaller errors, but most of them are comprehensible if we are thinking at those times of pioneering. Even he hadn't major works in numismatics, his merit is considerable, because he initiated and he had contributed to the development of the numismatic publications. He had catalogued tens of thousands of coins and he opened many ways for the scientific research. By his personal example he formed a lot of valued numismatists, like E. Condurachi, B. Mitrea, O. Iliescu, I. Ţabrea, V. Canarache etc.
