Pregătirea şi efectuarea operaţiunii militare pentru includerea Basarabiei şi Nordului Bucovinei în U.R.S.S. (iunie-iulie 1940)

  • Subiect: Integration of Bessarabia and the northern part of Bukovina into the USSR was carried out under the conditions of coalescence between the Soviet Union and Germany. For achieving this purpose, the regular troops of the Red Army were employed, which can be assessed as a well planned and prepared military operation. The Kiev and Odessa military districts were merged to form the Southern Front. As of 26 June 1940, the Soviet command concentrated 32 infantry, 2 motorized infantry, 6 cavalry divisions, 11 tank and 3 air brigades, 16 artillery regiments of the Commander - in - Chief Reserve, 14 regiments of the Corps artillery and 4 artillery battalions. While making the military preparations, the Soviet government mobilized foreign communist parties to support its policy. Romania had to accept the conditions of the evacuation listed in two Soviet ultimatum notes in the end of June 1940. On 28 June 1940, Soviet troops crossed the Dnister and by 3 July 1940 the operation for integrating Bessarabia and the Northern part of Bukovina into the USSR was accomplished. During the entry of the Red Army into the territory of Bessarabia and the northern part of Bukovina, there were a number of armed clashes between the Soviet and Romanian troops. Both sides suffered losses. Both sides used certain military and administrative measures towards the civil population. During the "march" of the Red Army, there functioned tremendous propaganda machinery with employing all forms of ideological work. This, combined with the military operation, facilitated a rapid and effective realization of the Soviet government's plan concerning Bessarabia and the northern part of Bukovina.
