Noi contribuţii la hidronimia Daciei antice: Identificarea geografică şi descifrarea etimologică a hidronimului "Auras" (Herodot, Istorii, IV, 49)

  • Subiect: This study is the first attempt in historical literature to a geographical and etymological identification of the hydronim "AURAS" mentioned by Herodotus (Histories, IV, 49) two and a half millenaries ago, the only hydronim of ancient Dacia cited by the "father of history" which remained unidentified. Re-estimating with impartiality and critical observation the few opinions and assumptions formulated till now using a large range of historical, linguistic and ethnographical arguments as well as valuable judgements and analogies, the author proves that antique AURAS is nowadays ARIES and that all the names given to this river (over 41-met in historical documents), beginning with AURAS and ending with ARIES have at the outset the same word "aur" ("gold") referencing the alluvial gold from the river and therefore the meaning of all the names is "The Golden River". ARIES - "The Goldan River" - as a basic meaning as well as figurative has been used as a hydronim so far by the Greek and Latin way (AURAS > AUREUS > ARIEŞ) the evolution in time of this hydronim is an extra prove supporting the theory of Romanians' sedentary character and continuity in Ţara Moţilor region named with a well - inspired metaphor - "the golden tiara" of Transylvania.
