Relaţiile dintre ortodocşi şi greco-catolici în judeţul Alba în lumina însemnărilor de pe cărţile vechi româneşti (secolele XVIII-XIX)

  • Subiect: The union of a part of the Romanians with the Church of Rome had deep consequences. The act of union led to the break of an ethnic unity whose structure had been based on religious criteria. This reality is illustrated by the terms used in the notes from the old Romanian books to designate the confessional belonging, more important than the ethnic one. The notions united and not united (with the Church of Rome) stand for the religious option of the individual or of the community. These terms point to the evolution of the connections, generally hostile, between the members of the two confessional communities. By the end of the 18th century and by the beginning of the 19th century new terms as: Orthodox, Greek-Eastern, Greek-Oriental or Greek-Catholic appeared, terms which strictly denote the individual's religious state and option. This evolution proves the increasing importance of the national unity over the confessional belonging. At the same time, the notes on the books mirror the contacts between the members of the communities in everyday life. By analyzing the notes and the terminology used in these books, structures of the religious mentality can be reconstituted.
