Portretistica în pictura ţărănească pe sticlă

  • Subiect: Until recently, the study of painting on glass was made only from an ethnographic point of view. But the craft is closer to the technique of easel painting than to the production of anonymous peasant artifacts. Therefore, an interdisciplinary research (i.e. an aesthetic approach to it) is quite necessary. It is very important to analyze their composition, their landscape and portraiture, with the means of the art critic. Though the painters had models to pose from them, some of the countenances of their saints exhibited genuine portraiture. As they had observed every detail in their contemporaries – their fashion, their movements and behavior, they also paid attention to their faces. Some are realistically traced, with correct shadows and volume, such as those made by Savu Moga of Arpaşul de Sus or Ion Pop of Făgăraş. But the majority of the painters ignored volume, their works being only two-dimensional drawings. Some painters could only produce figures resembling caricatures, due only to lack of skill and not a lack of devotion. Although the painters were not traveled people and some of them were quite illiterate, their works are reminiscent of the masterpieces of former periods such as the Romanesque, Gothic or baroque styles (e.g. the countenances of the Virgin and the child had often many traits from the Romanesque frescos of Catalonia; some decorations on the background or of the saints' clothes are reminiscent of Gothic art). This is a very good example of acculturation.
