Contribuţii la istoria aşezării de la Ad Mediam (Băile Herculane)

  • Subiect: The National Archive from Caransebeş preserves a map written in German dating from 1774, with a description of Băile Heculane. The map-drawing plan presents the buildings that existed at the time together with some areas where ancient ruins appear. To facilitate the study this map has been divided into four sections. The first section situated south of the Cerna river with a road access road from Mehadia, has a round building difficult to be identified archaeologically (of about 34 meters). The presence nearby of thermal springs could suggest the existence of a nymphaeum (?). The second section is the most interesting part, at the north of the Cerna river bank, destroyed by its course, appears the first building that reveals tracks of a thermal complex (prefurnium, frigidarium) and hot water pools, etc. Beside it, there is a second building, a temple, identified with the help of the votive shrines dedicates to Hercules found here, reminded by Cariophylus and Grisellini. The same destination is suggested by an inscription from the map.
