Activitatea "Astrei" pentru dezvoltarea învăţămîntului românesc din Transilvania în perioada 1861-1918

  • Subiect: The article is a synthetic treating of the multiple forms and aspects through which "The Transylvanian Association for the literature and culture of the Romanian people" contributed successively, between 1861-1918, by means of school, to the cultural progress of the Romanian people, subjugated by the Habsbourg monarchy. For the elaboration of this vast study the author has investigated the archive central fund of "Astra" from Sibiu. One of the first problems minutely presented in the article is that of education in the conception of the founders and in the initial program of "Astra". Integrated into the social-political and national context of Transylvania and reported to the general circumstances from the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the principal aspects of the school activity carried on by "Astra" (stipends and aids for the diligent young people, material and moral support for the village schools, high pedagogical schools, gymnasium and secondary schools, the endowment with books, reviews, text books etc.), pointed out with much concreteness in the article, gives the possibility of underlining the role played by "Astra" in this field, in a very difficult historical period, for the big majority of the population from Transylvania. The author reveals the consequences and the political-national significance of this activity. The support, by the most varied forms and ways, of a Romanian education was a collective means of resistance against the national and social oppression of the Romanian people in the conditions of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The constitution of the school section of "Astra", at the beginning of the 20th century, demonstrates directly and convincing this mission of coordinator and leader of the Romanian collective endeavors, on school level, till the Union of 1918.
