Documente privind strădaniile lui Timotei Cipariu de a edita "Arhivu pentru filologie şi istorie"

  • Subiect: The documents published here throw a light on Timotei Cipariu's efforts in view of editing the "Arhivu" as a bimonthly scholarly review, and also on the difficulties met in his way before he could carry through his intention. The documents are preserved in Timotei Cipariu's personal archive kept in the Blaj Collection of the State Archives of Cluj-Napoca. The content of the papers shows the tireless and perseverant activity of the great scholar in the summer and autumn of 1866 in order to win the cooperation of a printer (at Blaj or Sibiu), the material and moral support of the association Astra, some occasional collaborators and a minimal number of subscribers, by publicizing the content of the future periodical in the Romanian press. Meanwhile Cipariu had to face serious impediments raised by the Transylvanian authorities, who were considering disapprovingly the appearance of this review of philological and historic character that would educate and potentiate Romanian national conscience. Finally Timotei Cipariu obtained the permission to print the "Arhivu" early in 1867 at Sibiu, at the printer Samuel Filtsch, and he would direct the periodical from Blaj until the year 1872 (40 issues were published in all).
