Trăsărurile specifice ale evoluţiei tîrgurilor hunedorene

  • Subiect: The current paper attempts a reconstruction of the society and the human lives in Hunedoara County. Situated in southwestern Transylvania, in the twinning area of the Apuseni Mountains with the Southern Carpathians, this region has a mountainous landscape, rich in mineral resources. Several depressions are spread throughout as those of Brad, Jiu Valley, Haţeg, Hunedoara and Orăştie Bassins; there, fertile land, timber and stone are among the resources, along iron, gold and silver deposits. A few medieval citadels (Ilia, Deva, Orăştie, Haţeg and Colţ) are surrounded by larger or smaller domains (the economic base of the citadels). At the beginning of the 16th century, two more feudal domains are added, the ones of Deva and Hunedoara, with a series of boroughs (oppidum), and towns (civitas), sometimes legislated by chancellor's papers. The boroughs - real medieval institutions - had a particular social, economic as well as cultural importance. From West to East, throughout all the Europe, the boroughs have perpetuated in one form or another until recent times. The documents attested the existence in Hunedoara County of numerous settlements like these, beginning with the first half of the 14th century. In a chronological order there were: Orăştia (1324), Ilia (1350), Haţeg (1366), Dobra (1377), Gurasada and Baia de Criş (1427), Deva (1449), Şoimuş (1459) and Geoagiu de Jos (1494); some with an equivocal statute as borough or town, their subsequent evolution being specially marked by their placement at the intersection or close to big commercial, or fluvial routes. This allowed the inhabitants to do agriculture and cattle breeding as well as trade. They practiced trade in booths or shops also as haberdashers in weekly or annual fairs.
