Troiţele din Mărginimea Sibiului fenomen religios, cultural-artistic şi social

  • Subiect: Roadside crucifixes, specific Romanian architectural monuments, play an active part in the community life: here are celebrated the main religious misses which refer to protection and wealth: Epiphany, Pentecost, Ascension. In the villages in Mărginimea Sibiului we can find all kinds of roadside crucifixes: in the fields, at crossroads, at the entrance of the village, at bridges, at springs, in haunted places, cenotaphs, marking the place of an accident, displaying a great variety of artistic forms: simple wooden, stone or metal crosses, crosses with icons, monument crosses and painted and decorated little "chapels"; each one has a history and a purpose of its own. They offer important data concerning the local artists' craftsmanship, the fashion of the time they were made, the purpose of their building or information about their founders, etc. They are an important part in the social and spiritual life of that community representing the presence of God's protection for everybody.
