Ioan Popescu şi "Organul pedagogic"

  • Subiect: "Organul pedagogic" is the second Romanian pedagogic magazine printed in Sibiu after "Amicul Şcoalei". This magazine had nine numbers during the year 1863. This study deals, in the first part, with Ioan Popescu's life. He was one of the most remarkable teachers belonging to the Transylvanian Romanian school in the 19th century. He made his studies in Leipzig as a pupil of Ziller and was one of the disciples of Herbart pedagogic school. In this study there are followed the main directions promoted by this magazine concerning the Romanian teaching in that epoch. The development of the human personality and of the "national spirit" by means of education the place of school and teachers in this process; mainly of the teacher-as an example to be followed; as well as the principles of the instruction and education; the teaching and the learning methods, the place of punishment and reward in elementary school. Ioan Popescu, through his magazine, promoted a pedagogic conception like the moderate trend in German school, stressing the education and the building of characters. Concerning the problem of the confrontations in the Transylvanian Romanian press in the sixth decade of the 19th century about the development of the folk teaching, "Organul pedagogic" represented the official line of the Romanian Orthodox Church, defending the rights of the church about the organization and checking the teaching taking into consideration the confessional criteria. The arguments brought to these ideas came from the criticism of the rationalism about the relation between school and church, the main purposes of the teaching and of the religious education and the way they could come true. So, instead of the dilema of "national schools" or "confessional schools", Ioan Popescu brought the idea of national-confessional schools. This debate was going to end in 1868.
