Activitatea Astrei în perioada 1914-1918 şi locul ei în istoria românilor

  • Subiect: The period between 1914-1918, a very complex one in the evolution of Astra, signified in fact: the ceasing of the circle-like and of the general assemblies, the cutting down of personnel, the introduction of a budget of austerity, the paralyzing ofdivision, the disappearance of conferences, the liquidating of illiteracy, the suspending of the processing of bibliophile and museographic material, the renouncing to the "Biblioteca Poporana" (Popular Library) and so on. In parallel, new domains of activity emerged as a consequence of the war and Astra proved able to cope with the needs of the moment and get involved where it was requested. This cultural association proved, during the war, an instrument with discreet political echo, which on the cultural level opposed to the denationalization of the government. Astra subordinated itself to the policy of the Romanian National Party in Transylvania and Banat, and, actually, it was appreciated as symbol of the fight for cultural emancipation and, implicitly, of the national emancipation of the Romanians.
