Cariera romană de exploatare a calcarului de la Rapoltu Mare, jud. Hunedoara

  • Subiect: Stone exploiting from underground or surface quarries was an important occupation in the economic life of the Roman world. Archaeological research and written sources from antiquity reveal extensive activities and work on exploiting stone. In Dacia there is much historical documentation on this occupation due to predominantly mountainous terrain of Transylvania which provides numerous rocks sources that can be used by Roman builders and stonemasons. This type of stone quarries has been identified at the edge of Rapoltu Mare village in Hunedoara county. Limestone exploited there seems to have been used in construction of a villa in its immediate vicinity.
