Istoria localităţii Stoeneşti din judeţul Vâlcea reflectată în toponime

  • Subiect: Stoeneşti is situated in the north-central part of Vâlcea county, 24 kilometers from the county seat, on the national road no. 67 Râmnicu Vâlcea – Târgu Jiu. Geographically, it is located at the foothills of Căpăţâna, occupying a part of the sub-carpathian Vâlcea region, between Topolog and Bistriţa. In these places, safe and drawn from the path of invaders, withdrew from ancient times hermits, priests and even Wallachian rulers, which have built convents and churches in which they prayed to God. Some of them, being made of wood, have disappeared, but in their place were raised others in brick and stone wall, that last to this day, as a proof of continuity and Romanian spirituality in this region. They include the Jgheaburi (Gutters) hermitage, as well as toponyms related to its history, which refer to Basarab I the Founder (1310-1352), called by the legends the Black Prince. Legends transmit ancient traditions that were not recorded in writing until very late in the course of time. Therefore, in the absence of written documents, in which there appear different toponyms, these come to confirm a state of matter already existent. As the church inscription shows, in the history of the Jgheaburi hermitage there are three main points: the year 1310, when the old church was built of wood; 1640, when the scribe Matthew erects, during the rule of Matthew Basarab, another holy shrine, and 1827, when two parish priests built the present church and a hieromonk donated an estate for it. The church was consecrated by Bishop Neophytos of Râmnic. Toponymes like: Jghiabul, Izvorul Frumos, La chilii, Vatra mânăstirii, Suseni, Gruieri, La metoc, În Ţigănie, currently existing in the locality Stoeneşti, prove the existence of an organized church life here, by convents and parish churches, some missing, but which have played an important role in Romanian spirituality at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. They also built outbreaks or cultural centres for lay people, receiving literacy and enlightened servants of the great monasteries in the neighbourhood, Bistriţa and Arnota.
