Un document inedit despre revoluţia din 1848-1849 din Zarand

  • Subiect: During the Revolution of 1848-1849, the invading Hungarian insurgents subjected the Romanian people from Zarand Country to a genuine action of extermination. Hundreds of children, aged 1 to 14, women and people older than 70 were mercilessly executed by the invading troops. The children from the village of Bulzeşti were killed by being hit with stones in the head. In some villages from the Apuseni Mountains, the killers showed some sort of „humanity”. The suckling infants were placed on the breasts of their murdered mothers, and while most of them died of hunger, some were found alive a few days later. The inhabitants of the Zarand villages confirmed these murders. In the fall of 1849, a number of trustworthy villagers were chosen from each village and, after taking an oath, they were asked to say what they had seen during those events. They all confirmed the plunders, the arsons and the murders committed by the Hungarian troops. Those leading the Hungarian troops were Hungarian people from Zarand, among whom they had noticed Ribitzei Ferencz senior and Ribitzei Ferencz junior, Nemes Lajos, Nemes Dani, Nemes Pista, Borsos Marton, citizens from Brad. Korosi Gyorgy, Iano Ianos and a man from Hateg, by the name of Kardo, who lived in Ribita and who, with his own hand, killed two men from Ribita, stated the inhabitants of this village.
