The Recruitment of Soldiers in the Habsburg Army in the 18th Century

  • Subiect: This study embarks on a brief overview of the ways in which the Habsburg Army was recruited and completed in the 18th century and the early 19th century. In addition to the mercenary system perpetuated from the past, there was a transition toward the voluntary recruitment of paid soldiers from among the Habsburgs‘ own subjects, in parallel with soldiers from the neighbouring states. During the first decades of the 18th century, the mandatory recruitment of citizens deemed to be undesirable, dangerous and of too little use for the economy of the state was implemented.
