Diana de la Ostrov

  • Subiect: Diana from Ostrov In 1972 a causal discovery in the village of Ostrov (Hunedoara district) revealed a splendid Roman bronze statuette, representing Diana (fig. 1-ld). Dimensions: 16,2 cm high, 4,6 cm broad. The piece is exhibited in The Archaeological Museum of Sarmizegetusa (inv. no. 1468). This figurine, of an uncommon elegance, has good analogies in the classical art of the genre, as for instance the bronze in The National Library of Paris (fig. 2) or the pieces coming from Clermont-l'Herault (fig. 3), Pagonda (fig. 4) and Ephesus (fig. 5). All these statuettes are supposed to imitate a famous prototype, an Hellenistic statue of Artemid from The Museum of Louvre.
