Un nou depozit monetar antic descoperit lângă Zimnicea

  • Subiect: In the archaeological collection of the Pedagogical Institute from Bacău entered in 1969 ten ancient silver coins. The coins come from so-called place "Măgura râiosului", commune Fântânele, the town of Zimnicea (county Teleorman). The small hoard is composed of a tetradrachma of the island Thasos (an imitation), a drachma from Dyrrhachium (Dionysios-Meniskos) and eight roman republican denarii (C. Pluti 1, M. Herenni 1, L. Thorius Balbus 1, C. Fabi C. F. 2, C. Postumi A. 1, Sufenas 1, P. Clodius M.F. 1). The medium weight of the denarii is of 3.85 g and their state of preservation is good enough, Chronologically, the denarii are dated between 150/125-38 B.C. (Grueber) or between 137/134-41 B.C. (Sydenham). The hoard was formed in the first half of the lst c. B.C. (see the notes 9 and 10). This hoard has a similar composition to those of Bobaia (county Hunedoara), Suhaia (county Teleorman), Tisa (county Hunedoara), Pianu de Sus, Săcălăşău (county Bihor) and Novaci (county Ilfov). The hoard from Fântânele adds to the other discoveries of ancient coins from that zone (Zimnicea). This hoard increases at 36 the number of the hoards of Roman republican denarii of Muntenia (see the notes 20-31). Perhaps, this hoard belonged to the Getae and its origin is in connection with the trade route which crossed the ford of Zimnicea.
