Cercetările arheologice de la Costişa, jud. Neamţ, din anii 2001-2002

  • Subiect: By resuming the archaeological excavations at the Costişa site in 2001 we intended primarily to confirm the stratigraphic sequence as described at the beginning of the sixties. Three levels of dwelling were unearthed, one pertaining to the Bronze Age, the other two to the Neolithic period. The layer from the Bronze Age is approx. 0.35-0.40 m in depth, with agglomerations of pottery fragments at its base, most of them of Costişa type. At a few centimetres from the lower limit of the layer a rather compact boulders deposit was exposed. During the 2002 excavations, the hearths (V. 1/01 and V. 2/02) were unearthed, together with Monteoru pottery. Most of the Monteoru pottery came amid the boulders, anyway. Under the Bronze Age layer there is a rather thin layer, of about 0.10-0.15 m, that includes hearths (V. 1/01), adobe, red or white-painted pottery, animal bones. On the basis of the pottery, this layer can be assigned to an early stage of the Cucuteni culture (Cucuteni A). This layer covers another one, with an average depth of approx. 0.25 m, containing incised and channelled decorated pottery, adobe and bones. This layer pertains to a final phase of the Precucuteni culture (Precucuteni III). During the 2001 excavations, in area E, at the depth of 0.50-0.60 m a human skeleton was discovered, in anatomical connection, left-crouched, with its head oriented 3500%o SSV. The outline of the grave could not be indicated, so this burial cannot be ascribed to a certain period.
