O schiţă preliminară de reevaluare a Paleoliticului Superior de pe Valea Bistriţei

  • Subiect: The paper deals with the Upper Palaeolithic on the Bistriţa Valley (North-Eastern Romania). A handful of reasons motivated us to prepare this synthesis, but we would mention here only the most important: for one reason or another, the Bistriţa Valley has represented an important area of interest for the Upper Palaeolithic people. They repeatedly occupied this area, particularly during the Last Pleniglaciar and the Tardiglaciar. We expect that the actual occupational density was far more important than the one we know today. The settlements are usually well preserved, as the simple habitat structures suggest; very few sites were seriously affected by post-depositional movements and most of them are pluristratified. The radiocarbon dates, while confusing, nonetheless seem to cluster in few stages: 26000-27000 BP, 23000-24000 BP, around 21000 BP, 16000-19000 BP and probably a late Tardiglaciar occupation around 12000 BP. Whatever the cultural content of the respective layers may be, this chronology definitely suggests some cycles of human presence in the area. One may also notice the presence of two different “Aurignacian” and Gravettian traditions in the broadest sense, separated by the use of different raw materials, different reduction strategies, tools, retouch and prey choice. Until now, the contemporaneity between them has no stratigraphic basis and could only be accepted as a hypothesis. While the precise origin of the “Aurignacian” layers remained unclear, there’s no doubt that the Gravettian on the Bistriţa Valley displays constant and clear contacts with the Eastern Prut and Dniester area. To conclude, we would say that even if the knowledge of the Upper Palaeolithic from the Bistriţa Valley is just at the very beginning, we already know that it is a very promising area for future research. Apart from the identification of some new sites, a serious re-evaluation of the old information is required.
