Un muzeu inedit: "Neculai Popa" de la Târpeşti

  • Subiect: The name of Neculai Popa brings to our minds the smell of New Year’s Eve traditional dishes, as well as the image of masked dances specific to Romanian folklore. That is, because, first of all, he is a craftsman whose work – the handmade masks and statues inspired by Romanian folklore and customs – has been internationally recognized for over 40 years. But Neculai Popa is also an amateur archaeologist as well as a collector who transformed his home into a live museum, including three sections: the open air exhibition with wooden and stone statues carved by the artist himself, the “House of Masks” hosting his well-known smaller scale creations and the “House of Collections” comprising archaeological artefacts, traditional folk costumes and objects together with religious and naïve paintings. Once the visitor could have been guided through this surprising museum by the creator himself – a true story-teller – and nowadays if he comes to the village of Târpesti during the winter time, he will be lucky enough to see the traditions come to life, as the craftsman’s family and his home become the hosts of ancient Christmas and Year’s Eve folk customs.
