Mormintele medievale de la Cetatea Neamţ

  • Subiect: The preventive research carried out as a result of the rehabilitation and restoration works of the Neamţ Fortress, during 2007-2008, although limited, succeeded to confirm some of the observation made on the occasion of the previous archaeological investigations, but also brought forth some new elements to enrich the historical panorama of this important medieval monument. First of all, the excavations made in the interior court of the fortress, mainly the four sections, confirmed the fact that within those areas there have not been identified foundations of other previous constructions. To this order, no in situ complexes were identified, as the stratigraphy indicates the existence of several stages of levelling/improvement of the interior court. These details were also observed within the trenches dug for electrification and grounding purposes. The archaeological material cannot offer us much dating elements, due to the anthropogenic interventions which disturbed the stratigraphy of the areas we have researched, but we outline the fact that some of the ceramic shards, through the identified analogies, could be attributed to the second half of the 14th century, thus confirming the earlier opinions regarding the construction moment of this fortress. The most important archaeology related data were recorded / noticed within the sector of the Custodian House, where the excavations from 2008 confirmed the existence of a funerary space in place along the 16th-17th centuries. Considering the above mentioned observations, we can conclude that this research step did not have for goal the solving of all the unknown aspects related to the history of this medieval fortress, but managed to clear out several important elements necessary enough for a future analysis which should corroborate all the present day known data.
