Definirea spaţiului sacru: între monumental şi ritualic

  • Subiect: Our study is focused on the definitions of some frequently used terms in special studies about the sacred space and the ritual buildings. In the present paper, we wanted to identify the characteristics of the cultic spaces and the way these can be defined. One of our work hypotheses is, that any continuous activity of some group, such as the practice of a special cultic ritual is developing a social identity in special places, easily recognizable and concerning some new patterns transposed in the form of the rites and rituals. One of the characteristics of this identity is the special arrangement of the cultic space. In the Neolithic period there were probably in progress some rituals and some sort of religion. Every religion is based on two kinds of beliefs: one is that inanimate nature elements such as the water, the stones, the moon possess some common features to the animated elements such as humans, plants and animals. The second feature is the belief that all natural elements possess some qualities which argue the biological laws, including life after death, beings with supernatural powers and then the divinities. The naology as a science deals with the study of the religion and the way of display of public religious cult. The temples are usually constructions of larger dimensions regarding to the dwellings from the same settlement. The interior is spectacular, with monumental statues and mobile inventory used for rituals. The sanctuary or the shrine is a smaller construction, usually a simple chamber with special cult features. In Romanian there is no difference made between two terms: altar and altar chamber. The altar could be a table, or a bench where the inventory used for rites is displayed. The altar chamber is the special cubicle in which the ritual is performed. This paper has the purpose of specifying some aspects dealing with the working terminology. In older studies there is a major confusion between some specific terms, such as temple, altar, shrine, altar table, altar chamber. We made a special rapport between special archaeological dictionaries, the usually used dictionaries and some archaeological studies. We found much valuable information concerning the special definitions in the religious area in the archaeological studies concerning ritual structures or architectonic analysis. The temple, the megaron, the shrine and the altar are overviewed in the perspective of several definitions.
