Câteva consideraţii privind evoluţia sistemului monetar medieval moldovenesc în secolele XIV-XVI, în lumina analizelor atomice

  • Subiect: Unlike the Wallachian coinage, which was the subject of several atomic and nuclear investigations during the 1980s, the Moldavian coinage started to be investigated only quite recently. The first results were published only in 1997, by O. Iliescu. The author published the result obtained through the touch-stone method, made by experts of the National Bank of Romania, during the 1960’s on the reformed coin of Moldavian prince Peter III Aaron (1455-1457). The investigation of the Moldavian coinage started only after 1995, but it became systematic during the years 2005-2010, when two new programmes of investigations – ARCHAEOMET and ROMARCHAEOMET were launched, financed by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Innovation. On that occasion, a large scale XRF analyses programme, comprising more than 1,000 Moldavian coins was performed. These investigations offered an important amount of data regarding the evolution of the Moldavian coinage during the 14th-17th century. The new approach had in consideration also the investigation of the coinages of the neighbouring countries: Hungary, Red Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Bohemia, the Golden Horde, Caffa and the Ottoman Empire, which influenced the Romanian medieval coinage, and that of Moldavia, in particular. The results achieved during this programme led to the publication after 1997 of several contributions regarding the metrological evolution of the Moldavian coinage, however, most of the information collected is still unpublished. The author emphasizes some of the new facts brought by the XRF analyses regarding the evolution of the Moldavian coinage during the 14th-16th century, which contradict most of the current academic wisdom on this topic.
