Toponimul antic (H)almyris-Salmorus

  • Subiect: Abstract: The archaeological site situated E of the nowadays Murighiol Commune, Tulcea County, bore a double name in Antiquity: Almyris (gr.) and Salmorus/Salmorude (lat.). It is recorded in a significant number of historical and geographical sources. lf Salmorus seems of Thracian origin, its doublet Almyris renders the local place name in Greek. The toponym was built on the same principle as Halmydessos-Salmydessos, with the same roots, as in our case. Almyris-Salmorus as a place name consists in the joining of to IndoEuropean roots: als (Gr.)-sal (Thrac/Lat.) and myrislmorus both referring to 'salty water', 'sea', highlighting the environment and geographic milieu in which it developed at least in the historical period (6th century B.C.-&th century A.D.)
