- Subiect: In a “trial to synthesize”, the author proposes to present the spirituality, culture, and art from Râmnicu Vâlcea city, during the medieval and pre-modern period. In this respect, he firstly evokes a series of arguments that prove, together with concrete documents, the antique age and medieval continuity of Râmnic; the economic, politic, and administrative functions of the city that have been designated by King Mircea the Great, denominating the place as “the city of my reign”. A meeting place between rural and urban medieval civilisation, between oral and written culture, the Râmnic obtains a special spiritual and cultural role, once with the establishment of the Episcopate of Râmnic of the New Severin, in 1503. The 17th century is, for this prestigious episcopate who included entire Oltenia, a time of personalisation and consecration of its own spiritual and cultural life leaving a mark in the Romanian culture. The next century 18th, also called by historian Nicolae Bănica-Ologu “the golden age of Rămnic”, is the time of great contributions to the history of Romanian culture and spirituality.
