Călători străini prin Vâlcea, la sfârşitul secolului al XVIII-lea

  • Subiect: Imagology represents one of the new domains which can reflect human relationships or the way in which people interact. From this viewpoint, the approach to the history of Vâlcea County through the descriptions given by foreign travelers can highlight the psychology of the inhabitants, their social and economic progress and their strong ties with the traditions and customs of the past. In our presentation we rely solely on written sources published by the Romanian Academy in volume X of the collection “Foreign Travelers about the Romanian Provinces”, a volume divided into two parts which appeared in 2001. This volume presents the impressions of those who travelled across the country at the end of the 18th century. Out of the ninety - two travelers mentioned in this volume, only nine make reference to Vâlcea County and the Olt Valley in particular, a region between Wallachia and Transylvania. Two of them are Austrian agents, one is Russian, another two are hired by the Phanariot ruler Alexandru Ipsilanti, whereas the disinterested ones are two Englishmen, a theatre manager from Bratislava and a researcher in nature sciences. Their descriptions dwell on the relief, fauna, flora and natural resources of the region, on life in the rural and urban communities, forms of organization and religious institutions, customs considered „strange” and, last but not least, the potential for growth of the places on the right and left side/bank of the Olt, a potential which also interested great neighboring empires such as Russia, Austria and Turkey.
