Repertoriul descoperirilor arheologice din nordul Olteniei - cu specială privire la judeţul Gorj şi Vâlcea (depozite fosilifere-paleolitic)

  • Subiect: 20 fossil points and 7 paleolithic settlements were archaeologically investigated or accidentally discovered in northern Oltenia (Gorj and Vâlcea County). In the fossil deposit from Bugiuleşti, point Grăunceanu's Valley, the Olteţ region, it was found a complex with archaeological traces from about 30 animals specific to the fauna of Villafranchian, and it is supposed to be 1,800,000 years old. The oldest Paleolithic settlement in Romania, with a reliable stratigraphy and the most interesting testimonies of Paleolithic art was investigated in Boroşteni-Peştera Cioarei. The oldest sediment belongs to the interglacial Riss-Würm and to last living in full interstadial climate Nandru. Dated with C14 the objects found there are 42,000 years old. Known in literature as the interglacial Boroşteni or Boroşteni culture, it is regarded as one of the oldest inhabited Carpathian caves in Romania. The cave art found especially in the caves from Baia de Fier, Runcu and Polovragi was divided into two groups: painting and engraving. Their significance relates to the practice of rites and rituals with magic or might have a historical - narrative or commemorative significance of the tribal life then. This cave art has several periods: the oldest of them belong to the Upper Paleolithic, the rest are generally Eneolithic because of the archaeological traces discovered nearby.
