Subiect: The author revealed an image relevant to the material condition of the clergy of Oltenia from the last decades of the nineteenth century and the first two of the twentieth century. Most documents support the idea that the Romanian clergy was neglected by the state government. At the same time, there is enough information proving that, let to earn their living from the income of the priestly activities or of small personal business, not a few of the priests stood far above the average income of other state officials. Our intention was not to demonstrate the wealth or poverty of the clergy or to classify its material position in the society of the end of the nineteenth century, but to reveal how, working with the spiritual, the priesthood of that time was able to fulfill the material needs, in a society where the capital had an increasingly higher importance for its development.
