Despre Banat şi "Liga Culturală" din Râmnicu Vâlcea la Conferinţa Păcii de la Paris

  • Subiect: The main concern of the Romanian diplomacy in the years 1918-1920 was to obtain confirmation on the international scene through treaties, to build the Romanian unitary national state-as an expression of the free will of the Romanian people in the plebiscitary meetings in Chişinau (March 27 and April 9, 1918), Chernivtsi (15 / November 28, 1918) and Alba-Iulia (18 November/December 1, 1918). Among the most controversial issues at the Peace Conference was the territorial one. The Committees of experts from the United States, Britain and France had in mind when they prepared the materials for the peace board - the materialization of the principles of self-determination and ethnic backgrounds. If regarding Transylvania, the Romanian delegation had difficulties with the chief Anglo-Saxon diplomats, who tended to support Hungary's territorial claims, regarding Banat it was not intended to worsen the relations with the Serbo-Croat- Slovene Kingdom, but a rational understanding of border delimitation with Romania. Ion I.C. Brătianu exposing the point of view of Romania, claims the whole Banat on the basis of the Treaty and insists on its geographic, ethnic and economic unity. The claims of the Serbian delegation on the western part of Banat (Torontal County), were based on the principle of nationalities, economic and political needs and strategic interests. On this background of general frustration, the Romanian public reaction was swift, and its attitudes range went from deterrence to violent criticism and revolt. In this context, throughout the country impressive demonstrations organised by “The League for the cultural unity of all Romanians”, including that from Râmnicu Vâlcea took place both in the speeches that were spoken and the slogans displayed – under the motto of "full implementation" of the Treaty of Alliance from August 1916, launched by the head of our delegation during his journey to Paris. Despite all the downs of the Peace Conference from Paris (1919-1920) – taking into account the tendency of the Great Powers to expand the political, financial and economic spheres of influence, particularly on the count of the Member successor - the principle of nationalities was made at the international level, achieving in a democratic manner, the national aspirations of many European nations, among them those of the Romanian people.
