Centre de confecţionare a lăzilor de zestre în Vâlcea

  • Subiect: In Romania, the craft of making the dowry boxes are dating from thousands of years, even before the Roman occupation and is supposed that has Greek origins but it could be from Mesopotamia, the present Irak. The craft of dowry boxes found a favorable ground due to the massive resources of wood and has known the most important development starting with the end of middle ages. Decoration patterns are different from an ethnographical area to another, thus in the northern of Gorj county are frequent the geometrical images, in Transylvania we can find drawings that fills the expressive shape of the volume. In Vâlcea county the important facts about dowry boxes are: the geographical identification of craft centers in Vâlcea county; the establishment of characteristics for each center of manufacturing for dowry boxes; a stylistic comparison of the dowry boxes that belongs to the craft centers of Vâlcea county. From the point of view of their repartition, both as a number and the value of the specific pieces, the centers of Vâlcea county can be classified in two main categories: large centers, settled in big villages, in which the craft of making dowry boxes is still present nowadays, like Romanii de Sus and Poiana Perişani; small centers composed by small groups of craftsmen established nearby villages where the production of dowry boxes ceased or diminished considerably lately like: Călineşti and Valea lui Stan (from Brezoi), Bistriţa, Vaideeni, Urşani, Cerna, Şirineasa, Frânceşti. Different like shape, made from an impressive richness and original decorations, the dowry boxes has known a big development in some ethnographical regions of our country, from which, a remarkable place is taken by the craft centers from Vâlcea county.
