Un tipar ceramic din castrul de la Răcari

  • Subiect: The Roman fort of Răcari is well-known in the specialized literature. So far, there have been discovered four phases of construction and reconstruction, as it follows: the first one with the enclosure of earth and wooden palisade, dating back to the time of the Dacian wars (phase 1); the second phase is also of earth and wooden palisade, but the surface was extended a lot (phase 2); the phase of the stone wall (phase 3) was dated in the early third century; the fort was reconstructed in the mid-third century (phase 4). The military unit which was permanently stationed in the fort was Numerus Maurorum, certified here by a military diploma and numerous stamped or written bricks. The sizes of the fort are 170 m long and 141 m wide. From the dimension point of view it is the second stone fort of the province Dacia Inferior and of entire Oltenia, after the one of Slăveni. During the excavations in 2011 in the north-western tower of the Roman fort of Răcari, there was discovered a ceramic mould with a grotesque depiction. After a brief analysis, the author concluded that the mould could depict Silenus. The mould was used for making figurines which were meant to decorate the exterior walls of ceramic vessels; the figurines were pasted to the vessels.
