Daniile Sfântului Voievod Neagoe Basarab către mănăstirile de la Sfântul Munte Athos

  • Subiect: Saint Prince Neagoe Basarab was one of the greatest supporters of the Holy Places, especially of the Holy Mount Athos. In the sixteen century, he was noted in the history of the East Christianity by many donations made to Balkan monasteries of Mount Athos, in Greece and in Slavic area. In the work of founder and patron of culture and the Orthodox world, the Prince Saint Neagoe Basarab appears as a continuator of the Byzantine Emperors, concerned to support the Church, living under Ottoman rule. We know these donations from a characterization made by Gabriel Protos (Gavriil Protul) in a contemporary chronicle entitled The Life of Saint Nifon, former Patriarch of Constantinople and, later, Metropolitan of Wallachia and direct mentor of the great prince. Gabriel Protos describes the prince as “great founder of all Athos”. All of these donations come to fulfill the image of post-Byzantine basileos, on whose land all the institutions of the defunct Byzantium, including the very Mount Athos, had moved.
