Tipuri de habitat în arealul răsăritean al culturii Verbicioara

  • Subiect: We limit ourselves to the Lower Olt River Basin in presenting the habitat. Obviously, we make brief references to other parts of Oltenia and West Muntenia. The central axis of the space under consideration is the River Olt and its wider catchment. It has as geographical "borders" the Carpathians Mountains in the north and the Danube in the south. This territory includes several landscape units, each with specific characteristics. The major relief units crossed by the Lower Olt River and its affluents are: Subcarpathians, Getic Plateau, Romanian Plain and the Danube Valley. Favorable natural conditions influenced populating this region, natural resources allowing economic activities, breeding, cultivation and exploitation of local natural resources, especially the salt. The settlements of this culture are located along the main water courses in the vicinity of important resources such as salt, in caves or places thet adds some security. We find a predominance of settlements in the Lower Olt River Basin in the first phase in the north, specifically in there sources of salt and communication routes used to transport salt, concentrated in the Ocnele - Baile Govora area. In phase IV of the culture Verbicioara we notice an increase in settlements number. They are distributed along the Olt and its most important affluents. We can even speak about a shift to south-east direction towards the area occupied by other communities in this period, adding that this move was already reported on the south-west/northeast. Perhaps this shift led some experts to talk about a phase or a group called Govora-Fundeni. Dwellings do not seem to have a specific layout within the settlements. Most constructions are surface houses, but there were dwellings, at Vierşani-Jupâneşti.
