Importanţa necropolelor Žuto Brdo–Gârla Mare din vestul Olteniei

  • Subiect: In southwest Oltenia there are 12 cemeteries located in 9 localities. The ratio necropolis-settlement is documented at Ostrovul Corbului, river km 911, at Ostrovul Mare, river km 961 and at Izvoarele, river km 857. A problem of this culture is that of situating cremation pyre toward necropolis. Observations made in the necropolis from Gârla Mare, at river km 836+400, determined that the pyre was located right on the edge of the Danube, at about 400-500 m from necropolis. In this necropolis there are found the most graves, some with cremated bones from one secondary individual along with the main individual. In tomb No. 13 of this necropolis were identified cremated bones from two mature individuals of different sexes, these two individuals being cremated simultaneously. Žuto Brdo–Gârla Mare cemeteries were located in sandy soil. In the necropolis from Gârla Mare, at river km 839+300, the grave discovered in 2013 was dug in a clay ground in which it has not been observed the grave pit. The outline of the pit was observed in grave No. 3 of the necropolis at river km 836+400. No evidence of graves or prolonged use of the cemeteries led to disturbance of graves of Žuto Brdo–Gârla Mare culture by other burials of the same culture. Cremated bones were deposited in amphorae, but there are special situations when they were placed in different pots, such is the grave No. 20 from Gruia and the grave discovered in 2013 at river km 839+300. A large number of graves in the area have cremated bones deposited directly in pit or in urn and pit. In the graves from here there is a wide variety of offerings. An important place of these offerings is occupied by animal bones, a situation encountered in the cemeteries from Balta Verde, Ostrovul Corbului Crivina and Gârla Mare. The metal objects are rare east of the Iron Gates in Žuto Brdo–Gârla Mare culture. They are more numerous in western Oltenia toward eastern Oltenia being discovered in necropolis of Balta Verde, Gruia and Gârla Mare. Fragments from a bowl with thick walls, found in a grave from Gârla Mare, may belong to a melting pot for metal. All the differences found in the necropolis of western Oltenia towards the eastern part of the province suggests a gradual penetration of Žuto Brdo–Gârla Mare culture east of the Iron Gates.
