O excursie arheologică şi numismatică a lui Cezar Boliac din anul 1869

  • Subiect: Known as a poet and essayist and also as an enthusiastic and passionate archaeologist and numismatist, Cezar Boliac (1813-1881) initiated several archaeological exploration tours in 1845, 1846, 1858 and 1869. In a briefing on the trip of 1869, submitted to the Minister of Instruction and Religious Affairs, he presents his intention "to follow step by step, from Trajan bridge feet, all branches of the Roman roads, all ruins on the near sides of these roads, overwhelming evidence of the ancient colonies, until the decisive point of the Dacian war, to Sarmisegetuza, and then to all colonies of the Trajan Dacia for 170 years. Cezar Boliac is best remembered as the father of Romanian numismatics. In 1868, he initiates the first course of numismatics at the University of Bucharest, being followed by 37 pupils and students. In 1855, his collection numbered over 3,500 coins from all periods. Ten years later, many of them will be donated to the National Archaeological Museum, founded by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, thereby laying the foundations of the Museum's Numismatic Cabinet that functions until today.
