Instalaţii cu roată hidraulică orizontală pentru măcinat cereale, ilustrate în cadrul Muzeului Civilizaţiei Populare Tradiţionale ASTRA. Perspective tehnico-funcţionale

  • Subiect: The evolution of the watermill types and their building techniques was influenced by the geographical conditions that generated significant differences in terms of employment and spread of certain classes of hydraulic mills. Watermills with horizontal wheels do nat need a large amount of water in order to function. They exploit the potential of some small rivers with a reduced flow that can be increased by means of land arrangements, the speed and fall of the water being thus enhanced. The construction and usage of some installations with one, two, three or even six horizontal waterwheels indicate the technical and building ingenuity of the countrymen, as well as their endeavour to adapt to the extremely varied local geographical conditions. The national preindustrial traditional grinding systems for cereals are synthesized in the ASTRA open air museum due to the broadness of its thematic plan and the great number of mills exhibited here (six watermills with horizontal wheels, five wind-mills, six watermills with vertical hydraulic wheels, two floating mills, a horse-driven mill, a mill with alvan, a mill driven by hand and numerous rotating manual grinders). At the same time, the manner of exhibiting the collection of mills recommends the institution located in Sibiu as a museum holding one of the mast complete and complex typological series of traditional grinding installations for cereals among the collections of the European open air museums.
