Muzeele din România - potenţial didactic pentru studenţii străini

  • Subiect: In the vast domain of cross-cultural communication, a common cultural encounter with the Other happenswhen learning a foreign language. An even more daring experience, but extremely more demanding from a psychological and socio-cultural point of view, is learning the local language from native speakers. Teaching Romanian as a foreign language has always been a challenging experience, especially teaching it to the students from the Asian, Middle-Eastern and African countries. They are learning nat only a different language, but mast importantly they are trying to adjust to a completely new set of values, with a different timezone, different writing, different teacher-student interaction and different cultural communication skills to mention just a few issues. This "cultural bath ", that the foreign students are going through, leads to an inevitable cultural shock, with bigger or smaller impact, depending an the student's adaptability. In order to ease their adjustment in the Romanian academic environment, the language teachers try usingvarious strategies such as: psychological adaptability, social embracement and mast importantly cultural understanding strategies. Amang the different cross-cultural communication strategies used for teaching Romanian as a foreign language, exposing the students to the knowledge conserved in the Romanian cu/ture museums creates observable bridges between the students' mother culture and the new culture that they are trying to learn. The cultural differences can be better observed and understood byexposing the students to a preserved identity - the museums. This paper deals with the foreign students experience with some Romanian museums in Bucharest. As a frequently used informal teaching method, visiting museums and site seeing in general can offer a glimpse of the past, a view of the natives 'perspective upon their own culture. This perspective gives a temporal and a historical dimension to the cultural acts and it gives the students the opportunity to understand certain language issues, cultural attitudes and cultural evolution in a concise and observable manner.
