Pe urmele doctorului militar Ioan Arsenie din Gura Râului

  • Subiect: We aim at emphasizing the special cultural personality of military doctor Ioan Arsenie, horn in Gura Râului, which participated al the Mexico campaign of Emperor Maximilian and wrote the first journal of a Romanian in this country. The journal, which was wrongly attributed to the doctor's friend, Hilarie Mitrea from Rasinari, has been published in Wien after the author's return. The journal comprises pretious information concerning the cu/ture and the character of Mexican lndians, about the war, the fairs 'atmosphere, the monastery 's atmosphere, about economy and commerce, but he also notes impressions, his own opinions etc. Mexican lndians are regarded not only as soldiers in the Mexican Army, but alsa as men having their own private life. Arsenie believes that even oppressed by various dominations, they were superior to their oppressors, both with their physical and moral qualities. The interest manifested by doctor Arsenie towards local lndians is a very complex one, by mixing anthropological, ethnological, economica! and, fast but not least, historical curiosity.
