Clădirea veche a spitalului „Elena Beldiman” din Bârlad, pierdută în negura timpului

  • Subiect: „After almost two centuries, one of the most stately building from Bârlad - “Elena Beldiman” Hospital - remains only a memory for the citizens of our town. Only the Codrescu’s statue has resisted over the years. The statue is located in front of the hospital being a testimony of existence of the hospital institution. This statue is the creation of the renowned sculptor of German origin Frederick Storck (1872 – 1972). The “Elena Beldiman” Hospital was “born” on the 27th of October 1838. Until 1861, the hospital was housed on the Elena Beldiman’s property and then was moved in some inns. In 1867 the doctor Constantin Codrescu (1840 – 1891) convoked a meeting with the citizens of Bârlad. The purpose was to collect the necesary money for the foundation of the hospital guardianship, initially named „Bârlad and Elena Beldiman”. The hospital was built based onthe plans of the architect Alexandru Orăscu from Bucharest, on the property donated by Casa Obştei to the heirs of the governor Scarlat Sturza. Until the begining of the 20th century, the hospital had just a few doctors. Over the years, the hospital has developed withdepartments of internal disease, surgery, contagious disease, lung disease, laboratory of biological analysis, public bathrooms, X-raysmachines and a power station. From 1948 on, new departments have beem added: Dermatology, Obstretics and Gynaecology (1948), Pediatrics (1949), Ophthalmology (1954), Psychiatry and Neurology (1975). Just a single structure that was part of this old hospital building resisted until 2000. It worked along the new building of the hospital raised in 1975. In the last years, on the place of the old building and of the 1975 building, a new one wasbuilt: the „Elena Beldiman” Emergency Hospital and is still functions today.”
