Colecţia „Dumitru Dan" din patrimoniul Muzeului Judeţean Buzău. Un interviu despre călătoria pe jos în jurul lumii

  • Subiect: The “Dumitru Dan” Collection from the patrimony of the Buzău County Muzeum. An interview about travelling around the world on foot The first part of this article introduces the collection of items that belonged to the first Romanian globe-trotter, Dumitru Dan (Buhuşi, 14 July 1890 - Buzău, 4 December 1978), a collection that is in the patrimony of the Buzău County Museum, with a total of 306 items. This is a collection that provides an amazing amount of information, first and foremost about the cultural, politica!, geographic and professional diversity of the people that the globe-trotter encountered during his trip around the world ( during 1910-1916 and completed on 20 July 1923), as well as the people that he met later on, in the 70s and 80s, at the conferences held all over the country about his globetrotting, full of adventures and situations of every kind, some of them extremely dangerous. Dumitru Dan was declared the winner of the contest organized by the French Association Touring-Club de France for the 100.000 kilometers travelled around the world on foot. We need to mention that this trip began on 1 April 1910, in Bucharest, together with three other Romanians, Alexandru Pascu, Gheorghe Negreanu and Paul Pârvu, accompanied by a shepherd dog, Harap. Along the route, the other members of the Romani an team died in India, China and the USA, and Dumitru Dan was the only survivor of the Romani an team and the winner of the contest. Under the contract with the French tourism association, the route of 100.000 km on foot was to be completed in 6 years, but by 1 April 1916, D. Dan had travelled 96.000km, and put the trip on hold because of the imminent involvement of Romania in the First World War. Because he had suffered many accidents during the trip, D. Dan failed the medical check for the army drafting, and he volunteered for war service. He was active for three months in Buzău, in the 5th Division Buzău (Regiment 8 Buzău), and later withdrew with the army to Iaşi. Because he spoke many foreign languages, he was a translator secretary with the Anny Headquarters, at Bureau 2 Counterintelligence, with the rank of officer. For services to the country, he received the medal "Commemorative Cross of the 1916-1918 War'', which is in the patrimony of the Buzău County Museum. There are other objects which belonged to the globe-trotter and which are in institutions such as the "Iulian Antonescu" History Museum in Bacău (169 items) the Museum of Sport in Bucharest (150 items), as well as the "V. Voiculescu" County Library in Buzău (4 items). The second part of the article presents the content of an audio interview, recorded on magnetic tape and converted to digital format at the Buzău County Museum, an item registered in the History collection, in 2012, under no. 53496. This magnetic tape was purchased from the Sârbescu family, in the locality of Beceni, Buzău County, and contains a 36-minute interview given by Dumitru Dan to a reporter, in a hotel lobby, in a place not yet identified. This recording is from sometime between 1967 and 1969, most likely from 1968, and contains the reports by the globe-trotter about his extraordinary travels around the world that took place in the second decade of the 20th century.
