  • Subiect: A Document about the Situation of Transylvania Twenty Years after the Union with Romania The Memorandum of Transylvanian Romanians (from Banat, Ardeal, Crişana, Satu Mare, Maramureş) was addressed by the outstanding members of the National Peasant Party to King Carol II on the 15th of December 1938. The document had 10 pages and its principal authors were Iuliu Maniu and Mihai Popoviciu together with other 48 outstanding members of the party. The Memorandum was accompanied by an explanatory annex called "Reflections and explanatory notes"; it had 23 pages and discussed in details in well divided chapters, all the problems included in the document. Starting from the three components of the Transylvanian ideology before 1918 (nationalism, social justice and democracy) the authors make a critical presentation of the development of these territories in the 20 years that followed the Union with Romania (the disadvantageous position of the Romanian National Party, the unfavorable evolution of the political structures from Romania, the unjust treatment that the territories united with Romania had to undergo etc.). The Memorandum demands the King Carol II to have regard for the fundamental principles of the Alba Iulia Assembly, it pleads for the restoration of constitutional order, the arming of the country and respect for the territorial autonomy.
