Alegerile parlamentare din mai 1918 în judeţele Buzău şi Râmnicu Sărat

  • Subiect: The parliamentary elections of May 1918 in Buzău and Râmnicu Sărat counties March 4th, 1918 saw the end of the government headed by General Alexandru Averescu, whose government was disliked by Germany for making peace with Romania. King Ferdinand I appointed Alexandru Marghiloman, well-liked by the Germans, as head of the new government on March 5th, 1918. The two chambers of Parliament were dissolved on April 25th, 1918 and the new government made the decision of organizing parliamentary elections for the Senate on May 19th - 21st, and for the Assembly of Deputies on May 23rd - 27th. The elections would take place in the context of the country being, most of it, under enemy occupation, tom by war, migrating and enduring harsh deprivations. The electorate was summoned to designate a new Parliament by means of wealth-based ballot in electoral colleges. These were the last parliamentary elections to take place in Minor Romania in this format. The making of the electoral lists, the enrollment of candidates and the electoral campaign proved quite difficult. The goveming Conservative Party headed by Alexandru Marghiloman resorted to all means available to support their candidates and win the elections. In Buzău County, two parties designated their candidates for the Senate elections: the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. In Râmnicu Sărat, only Marghiloman's conservatives, proposed Senate candidates. lt is worth mentioning that the head of the Conservative Party, Alexandru Marghiloman, ran in neither Buzău, nor Râmnicu Sărat, but in Teleorman, where he was elected Senator, and in Iaşi, where he got a deputy term. The May 1918 elections were won with crushing majority by the Conservatives in a context where in many counties the other politica! players had no designated candidates. The wealth-based electoral system thus proved its limitations. lt would later be replaced for the following elections, i.e. for the first Parliament of Great Romania, with the universal ballot. The newly elected Parliament, including 18 Members of Parliament (seven senators and eleven deputies) from the Carpathian Arc area (Buzău and Râmnicu Sărat counties) opened its works on June 4th, 1918 in Iaşi.
