In memoriam: Emil Racoviţă

  • Subiect: In memoriam Emil Racovită The National Archives of Romania preserve in the documentary fund created by the academic Stefan Mileu, this precious material, regarding the life and scientific personality of the scientist Emil Racoviţă, elaborated on his death in 1948. Emil Racoviţă, born in lassy on 1 868, November, 15 in a Moldovian boyard family, was licentiate of law (1889) and natural science (1891); doctor at Sorbonne University in Paris (1896) and was the first Romanian asked to participate, on "Belgica" vessel, in the expedition organized at the end of XIX century, for the North Pole. The founder of a new science, biospeology, Emil Racoviţă gave up all the advantages offered by foreing countries to lead the Speleology Institute in Cluj, founded in 1920, where all the research results were used. His scientific activity was crowned by his election as member and president of the Romanian Academy and of numerous European scientific societies (of the naturalists in London, Anvers, Barcelona).
