  • Subiect: Defender of democratic ideal dr. Nicolae Lupu Nicolae Lupu was born on the 4th of November 1876 in Arsura, a village in the district of Vaslui. He studied at the famous "Mihaileana" Academy, in Iasi. He graduated in 1894 and then attended medical universitary studies. In 1901 he lok his PhD. However, he refused to become a professor at the University, instead preferring a post in the district of Falciu, clase to his native place. He published social articles in the magazine called "Viata Româneasca", in which he disapproved of the harsh life conditions of the peasants in those times. Between 1907/1908 he was a governor of the district of Falciu. Later, in 1913 , he was elected deputy, representing this district in the Parliament. He was in favour of Romania entering the First World War ( 1916/1918), in order to build its national unity. During the interbelic period he had a rich parliamentary activity as part of the social-democratic political groups and then as a member of the National Party who represented the peasant, by introducing some large reformes for the people. The purpose of these reforms was to consolidate the democracy and to stop the ascension of the fascism Nicolae Lupu was the president of the National Committee For Peace (1936) and he criticized the measures undertaken by the authoritarian regime of king Carol II, also the territorial losses in the summer of 1940 (the north of Bucovina, Basarabia, the Cadrilater, the north-west of Transylvania), the rise to power of the military regime of general Ioan Antonescu and Romania's adheration to the Axis in the Second World War. After the war, when the parliamentary life was coming to normal, dr. Nicolae Lupu reorganized the National Party who represented the peasants, with which he participated in the elections in november 1946. However, the elections were forged and the pro-comunist politica! forces were victorious. In the year 1947 the bourgeois parties and groups were dissolved, the monarchy was abolished and Romania became a popular Republic (the 30th of December 1947). This was the beginning of the totalitarian communist regime in Romania, which lasted almost a half a century. In these hard times dr. Nicolae Lupu's life ended. He was a man who fought his entire life against totalitarian regimes and in favour of democracy.
